  Jamie Tang

Qi-Mei Jamie Tang is an 18-year-old from Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was born in California but has lived in New York, Shanghai, Taiwan, Singapore, and Ann Arbor. As a Taiwanese-Singaporean-American, Jamie appreciates the value of the arts and cultural immersion. From a young age, her parents instilled in her a strong sense of duty and thirst for anything creative.

A former pianist and artist of over a decade, Jamie never lost her love of language. However, she never incorporated her East-Southeast Asian heritage into her writing until discovering the ancient strategy boardgame Go in 2019. A year later, her play The Game of Life centered on a Japanese-American Go family, won the Greenhills School McDowell Writing Award.

Following her transformative gap semester experience in 2021, Jamie realized she wanted to utilize her writing abilities to empower others. She joined Huron High School’s nationally award-winning newspaper, The Emery, which sparked her interest in health and healthcare. The Emery gave her a platform to research medical history and interview healthcare providers to craft articles on sexual abstinence history, a bipartisan bill preventing sexual assault under medical pretenses and the expansion of free COVID-19 tests.

Additionally, Jamie began to actively contributing to developing journalism in the North American Go community. Upon the release of her article on Jeremiah Donley, she was happy to hear several beginner players express their desire to improve in Go and even study the game in China like Donley. She aspires to inspire Go players to find beauty in the simplicity of the game and hold onto their love for the game to the end.

Over recent years, Jamie is proud to have grown as a leader in the communities she serves. As the President of the American Go Honor Society, a high school-led youth Go organization, Jamie used her journalism knowledge to ensure the cohensiveness of the articles, graphics, and new social media accounts. She also collaborated with AGHS Media Marketing Manager Julia Zhang, where they mobilized college students to co-found a unified American Collegiate Go Association to support intercollegiate Go opportunities.

Jamie has a deep aspiration to serve communities, locally and globally. She applies her versatile skillset, developed from her hands-on experience managing teams and organizing tournaments, to her service. In college, she looks forward to expanding her skillset and worldview.
