QI-MEI JAMIE TANG
Marketing & Engagement
My involvement in journalism and the Go community has taught me that networking trumps everything. Sure, working hard and showing up is important, but ultimately, what matters is the impact you make on the community.

Fundraise
Meeting fundraising deadlines
The Emery is self-funded without any funding from the school. Each issue requires $600 to print. I sold several advertisements to a local coffee shop, Comet Coffee. The donation from Comet Coffee enabled The Emery to meet our fundraising needs a few days before the deadline to compete in the 2023 JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Boston.
Market
Promoting the ancient game Go
In my various Go leadership roles, I have coordinated donations, grants and a recent corporate sponsorship for the Evanston Go Club's 2024 Chicago Open. My event materials have been featured in the American Go E-Journal and Baduk News. Our Evanston Go Club organizing team begins marketing our events months in advance and constantly adds initiatives to attract out-of-state competitors. Marketing efforts have enabled the Evanston Go Club's tournaments to grow into the largest Go events in the country starting last year. Our 2023 Chicago Open and 2023 Chicago Rapid welcomed over 100 players from across 15 states, breaking records as the largest-ever Midwest Go tournaments. As the ACGA Co-founder and Organizing Director, I used my network to host the Virtual ACGA Pilot Tournament with the support of four partnered Go organizations: American Go Association, Baduk Club, Evanston Go Club and Leago.
I continue to collaborate with Baduk Club to bring live-streaming to my events, such as the AGHS Young Lions Go Tournament, to provide paid opportunities for top players and reach a broader audience. I have written many AP-style press releases to promote dozens of Go events. Notably, my Baduk News articles on the Evanston Go Club's tournaments, including the 2023 Chicago Open and 2023 Chicago Rapid, found their way to writers at The Daily Northwestern (see article by Jack Ververis here).
Engage
GenZ on social media
I apply the many tips I've learned from hands-on experiences and journalism workshops. I utilize my journalism background to advise on creating streamlined marketing platforms. I have immense gratitude to Julia Zhang, the leading Canadian youth promoter, for her virtuosic design skills and receptiveness to feedback. The success of the ACGA and AGHS Instagram accounts, which have nearly 100 followers in their first few months, is thanks to her work.
