Marching Onwards
After months of writing in-depth news articles, I was ready to write a light-hearted feature. I completed this article and interview within an hour. Suddenly, feature writing was no longer as complex as it once was. It was refreshing to hear Stenger's pragmatic approach to sustainability.
From Father to Son
My hometown, Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a "little gem." Hard to find, but easy to love. I aspire to contribute work that only those who appreciate its content can discover. This article lacks the hundreds of views of my best-performing Go articles but holds a special place in my heart. Having lost my brother to a car accident, I wanted an article that touches on the relationship between life and death, which is crucial to excelling at Go.
On & Off the Board
In between three flights home, I published four personality profiles on the Go players competing at the 2023 NAGF Professional Qualifications to vie for professional status. I wanted to do my duty to compensate for the limited coverage on the high-stakes event. Donley's authentic response shined through in his article. I initially published these articles with an earlier publication date on Baduk News' old version.
Behind the Sewing Machine
I wrote this feature by accident. I was passing the school theatre when I saw two freshmen sewing away. My computer was dead, and my phone barely had 5% of the battery left. Determined to share their story, I started firing questions and snapping photos. Afterward, I raced home and wrote out as much of the interview from memory as I could. The fusion of quotes and historical insight would make this feature one of my favorites.
Dance on the Beat
I wrote this article at the week-long Columbia Scholastic Press Association summer journalism workshop. The professor, Chris Waugaman, set aside a few days to work on our features. On the first day, I returned to my dorm early and finished my draft from beginning to end, never wanting to leave work unfinished. I had so much fun learning about the tight-knit community of El Paso through the eyes of a dancer.
